Developing Listening and Speaking Skills for Communication and Fun at Primary Level
- Young children may not find it easy to use English to communicate in the classroom, as the mother tongue comes far more naturally and logically when they focus on communicating together.
- This presentation explores the challenges teachers and learners face in developing listening and speaking skills with Primary children and offer practical solutions to overcome these challenges and ensure children use English to communicate.
- Classroom routines, strategies, and activities will be presented and analysed. Teachers will get lots of practical ideas to take straight back to their classrooms.

Teen Appeal
- The word teenager was first coined nearly a hundred years ago but it has taken a long time for young people between 13-18 to be considered a distinct group in education in particular in English language classes. Yet, we teachers know full well that there are huge differences between adolescents and younger children and that they are not yet adults. This presentation explores the nature of these many differences and what it means to the English language class in terms of materials, tasks, dynamics and class management. For example, Kieran Egan, the educational philosopher, describes this time as the ‘philosophical period’ of development, when we are desperately trying to find meaning in everything around us.
- Being a teen means having to deal with physical, social, emotional, and cognitive turmoil; often not being understood by the adults around you or even yourself and having to deal with pressure like taking formal exams that can affect your future choices. So, this presentation aims to identify how we can take these factors into account in our classrooms, for example choosing to read about and discuss younger role models; allowing for personalisation and by considering how groups work together, being sensitive to the clashing pressures involved in being a teen.
